schsstudentravens_101509Briannah Smith, a South Carroll High School senior, recently beat out hundreds of other nominees from the state to claim the title of Ravens Athlete of the Week.

The field hockey player was nominated by her coach for the title. Aside from the prestige, Briannah also received free tickets to a Ravens home games, a press pass to go down to the field, a team jersey, a hat and a $500 donation from the Ravens to her field hockey team. But what makes her stand out from other players?

“Hard work,” her mother Terry Smith said. “She sets high and lofty goals and she has put herself to the task of accomplishing them – she’s just working really hard.”

Smith mentioned that Briannah went to the game with her father and that together they had a lot of fun. “She had a blast,” Smith said.

She added that Briannah was the forth daughter in the family, and that this could have led to the determination and perseverance that earned her the title.

“She kind of felt like she danced in the shadow of a lot of people through the years,” Smith explained. “She has worked herself to a place now where she is receiving a lot more attention.”

Briannah’s dreams don’t end with the Ravens Athlete of the Week honors. Smith mentioned that she will be attending Radford University in Radford, Va., as a Division I field hockey player next year.
