Mrs.
Brenda Alexander
A Liberty High School English Teacher
It
was 1980 and the only high school that was close around for Eldersburg
students to attend was South Carroll. Unfortunately, this
school was becoming crowded and had an increasing number of students
in the years to come. So the county decided to build a new
high school. They decided to name it Liberty High School and
in 1980 it opened. With a new school you need new teachers.
One teacher that accepted the job in the English department was
Mrs. Brenda Alexander.
Growing
up, she lived in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area and went to the
beach a lot. She had two sisters and life was fun. Even
though her family was middle class, she still enjoyed life to the
fullest. Later in life she attended Towson University for
her under grad and graduate school. It was a school that was
not too large, nor too small. Here she had majored in English
and French, satisfying her love for languages. Her father
and mother inspired her to teach because they are both teachers.
With her favorite subjects in school being English, French and Latin,
she later in life decided to become an English teacher at Liberty
High School.
When Liberty first opened
she started teaching there. She enjoyed, when the school opened,
the formation of the smaller student body and how Liberty didn’t
even have a graduating class. She also favored how everyone
worked together like a family unit. Here at Liberty she has
taught for 23 years; she also taught at FSK (Francis Scott Key High
School) for one and a half years. In addition, she taught
at a Catholic School for five years before she even came to Carroll
County. Mrs. Alexander teacher 9th and 11th
graders at Liberty High School.
At
this point in her life she really enjoys teaching because she cares
about young people and every day is a new day - it has new
experiences and new challenges. Currently, she has been teaching
for 30 years. If she didn’t pursue her career in the English
field she would have become a speech therapist. Her husband,
daughter and nephew-in-law are all teachers. She has a son
and a daughter who live with her in Baltimore City. In about
10 to 20 years she sees herself retiring and enjoying her grandchildren
(she says hopefully her own children will have children).
As always, she remembers the students that come back to Liberty
and say to her “thank you for caring and teaching me.”
Indeed,
Mrs. Alexander has taught for many years and is greatly appreciated
at Liberty High School. Thank you Mrs. Alexander.
